Even if you’re only in it for a few minutes, there are a few etiquette that everyone who uses the elevator should pay attention to in public places. In principle, we must still be aware that we are not the only elevator users. Therefore, we need to be tolerant with fellow passengers. Anything that can annoy, complicate, irritate, or make us uncomfortable, don’t do it to other people.
There are at least three reasons for unethical actions when riding an elevator in a public place. Let’s discuss them one by one.
1. Concerned only to their own comfort.
Sometimes people want to get out of the elevator quickly so they always stand in front of the door. Or they force their way into the elevator because they want to get to their floor quickly. Or they’re tired of carrying things, so they put their stuffs carelessly on the cabin floor which ends up disturbing other people going in and out. There were also passengers who entered last, but did not want to leave even though the room was too crowded and the overload alarm had sounded, forcing other passengers to get out so the elevator could move.
All this unethical behavior arises because they are concerned only with their own comfort, and do not care about other’s. Maybe it’s because they’re too tired to care, or maybe it’s just bad habits. Regardless, their behavior clearly annoys others.
2. Neglecting the comfort of others in the elevator.
We have also seen elevator passengers talking to each other, joking, or arguing loudly in the elevator cabin, making those around them uncomfortable. Especially during a pandemic like this, talking in a closed room increases the risk of transmitting Covid-19. There are also people who take calls and talk loudly, without realizing it disturbs other passengers. There are also couples who are “too affectionate” in the cabin, forgetting that their actions are seen by many people, including minors. Sometimes people can also be found entering the cabin with dirty clothing and a strong smell of sweat, cigarettes, or liquor. This makes people feel uncomfortable, they can even feel threatened for their safety.
All of this happens because they are engrossed in themselves and forget to appreciate the comfort of their fellow passengers in the elevator. Their actions are disturbing, even dangerous for other passengers.
3.Fun seeking attitudes.
Young children entering elevators are sometimes attracted to floor buttons that light up when pressed and eagerly press as many floor buttons as possible. As a result, the lift stops at each floor, delaying the journey of all passengers, including those who are queuing on other floors.
This kind of fad behavior may still be understandable if the perpetrator is a small child. But sometimes teenagers or adults can also act excessively in the elevator so that it disturbs and endangers other passengers.
These are three sources of unethical behavior when using the elevator in public places. Do we still do it often? Do you often prioritize your own comfort while forgetting about the comfort of your fellow elevator passengers? Let’s change to be a better and responsible person in our society!
